Madrid Pre-Departure Information

Before students begin their semester, summer, or academic year in Madrid, Spain, there are several items that need to be submitted to IAU's U.S. Office. Please complete these in a timely manner. Below there are links to several important documents that need to be submitted electronically or downloaded, printed, completed, and returned to IAU's U.S. Office via fax or email using the contact information on the form. 

  • Physician Statement and Wellness and Accommodations Questionnaire - In order to better assist students while abroad, we request that students complete the Physician Statement and Health Questionnaire. This information will allow IAU to provide support should health/mental health concerns arise during the study abroad experience, and particularly in the event of a health emergency. IAU may request additional documentation from students’ health care provider as part of their application. This documentation will provide guidance to IAU on how to best support students during their participation in the program.

  • Financial Assistance Form - If you are relying on financial assistance to cover all or a portion of your IAU tuition and fees, please download the Financial Assistance Form, complete your portion, and then have a financial aid advisor from your home instruction complete their section and upload it to your IAU Portal. 

  • Travel Itinerary Please complete the online form through your student portal.

  • IAU Post Acceptance Waivers - Complete and submit in your IAU Portal. 

  • Program Deposit - For students invoiced by IAU directly for the program deposit, the remainder of your nonrefundable deposit of $800 is due within two weeks of acceptance. The deposit secures your course registration and homestay placement. These placements will not be secure until this payment is made. You can pay your deposit by check or credit card. Passports 
Please note that for all IAU programs your passport must adhere to the following guidelines: it must be in good condition, with a date of expiration at least 3 months after the end of your stay in the Schengen area (Europe), and issued within the past 10 years and containing at least 2 blank pages. 

Visas
Semester and academic-year students will need a Student Visa to study in Spain. All visa processes go through the Spanish Consulate. To find out which consulate you will visit to apply for your visa, please refer to the Spanish embassy website. IAU will provide the necessary documentation needed to prove you will be a student abroad, but the remaining application and materials are the responsibility of the student. 

Travel Arrangements
 
Please plan to arrive in Madrid between 9am and 2pm on the official IAU arrival day. For most students, this means departing the United States the day before, as you will lose hours due to the change in time zone and transatlantic flight. If you wish to arrive before arrival day, please be sure to make your own housing arrangements for those extra nights as you will not be able to move into your accommodations until arrival day.

An IAU representative will meet you at the airport on arrival day and assist you back to your housing arrangements in Madrid. Orientation will take place the following Monday. 

Please note that you must move out of your housing (homestay or apartment) by 11:00 am on departure day. You are welcome to stay in Europe after this date. However, please note that after departure day you will be responsible for your own housing accommodations.

Finally, when purchasing your flights, please be sure to fly into the Madrid Barajas airport (MAD). Once you have purchased your flight, please submit your itinerary via email and please submit the details through your student portal. If you have any questions, please contact enroll@iau.edu.

Summer Term Students: Within two weeks of acceptance or April 15 - whichever comes first (Program Deposit and Financial Assistance Form), May 1 (Travel Itinerary, Wellness Questionnaire, Post-Acceptance Waiver)
