Alumni Through the Years
Emily and Michael Grady
Aix-en-Provence, 1979-1980
Mike, a professor of education and Emily, a middle school teacher, both made the bold decision to live and study in Aix-en-Provence with IAU in 1979-80. Mike could study comparative education while in Aix, and Emily volunteered in a local school teaching English. They both enjoyed the IAU art and literature classes they took in addition to the language courses, and they especially loved living with their hosts, the Tavernier family, celebrating Christmas with their family and caring for their dog when they traveled. Upon returning to the U.S., Mike recommenced his work as a professor at Saint Louis University and Emily, inspired by the literature classes she took with Professeure Elisabeth d’Anselme at IAU, began work on a M.A. in English literature. They describe their year at IAU as a turning point in their lives, giving them the chance to shift an American perspective to embracing their place as citizens of the world.
Annabelle Smith
Aix-en-Provence, Spring 2026
“I lived in a homestay with a wonderful host mom who spoke no English. There were some growing pains at first: trying to get used to each other’s accents, realizing what cultural references wouldn’t translate, and filling the many gaps in my French vocabulary. Because of this, I have had an amazing time and felt supported as I make mistakes and grow in my time in Aix-en-Provence. My host mom has shared her favorite parts of the city with me, introduced me to her family, and taken me to cultural events that I would never have discovered otherwise. I have had the privilege to truly feel like I’m living in Aix instead of just visiting. I’m still a tourist in a lot of ways, but my living style has allowed me to be a mindful and educated participant in my host city.”
Dylan Murray
Barcelona, Spring 2025
“My time at IAU Barcelona was better than I could have imagined. Getting involved as Student Council President allowed me to organize student events, redesign student spaces, and advocate for student voices to improve everyone’s experience. My main takeaway was that the best inspiration comes from being outside your comfort zone. While living in a foreign country and traveling to others, you’re constantly being put outside your comfort zone, whether it’s a strange environment, language, or way of life. That discomfort fueled my creative juices to plan and provide engaging events and material for student government. All in all, I had a blast serving on student government while abroad, and it enhanced my experience two-fold!”

Suzanne Peterson
Aix-en-Provence, 1961-1962
“Studying abroad with IAU in Aix made me see the world differently; my way was not the only way to do things. I loved the small town feeling and made many friends in Aix. I learned French in order to survive. I had had two years of Latin and two years of Spanish. I had 6 weeks of French taught by Mr. Booth and after which I could actually put together simple sentences. No word of English was spoken after the first 10 minutes of class. It was an excellent way to learn. Aix was small enough at that time to get to know many of the local people.”
Matt Ragghianti
Avignon, 1992
“Simply put, these were the most transformative 6 months of my life. Avignon was a dream, as were my instructors and the limitless opportunities to explore the country, the region and my own insatiable appetite for adventure and learning. I remain very close friends with several of the people I was lucky enough to meet in Avignon—from all around the world—and have hosted them at my home in Los Angeles as recently as last month.”
