OVERVIEW
The Resident Fellows Program at IAU is designed for visiting professors on sabbatical leave from their home institutions. Fellows can integrate into IAU’s existing academic infrastructures in France and Spain which include faculty, facilities, library, and archives. Many of the past Fellows worked on books or research projects, as well as collaborated with different IAU professors and students on various projects and learning activities. Fellows do not teach at IAU. However, in exchange for the fellowship, they are asked to provide one or two guest lectures to IAU students in their area of expertise. Faculty interested in teaching should consider IAU’s customized/faculty-led opportunities. The Resident Fellows Program is available at IAU’s Aix-en-Provence, France, and Barcelona and Madrid, Spain campuses.
ELIGIBILITY
IAU welcomes applications from faculty at participating U.S. partner institutions. Partner institutions include colleges and universities with signed agreements with IAU. IAU will occasionally accept nominations from distinguished faculty from the EU, the Middle East, and North Africa. Ultimately the deliberations and final decisions made by the Selection Committee are primarily based on the research project and the overall connection to IAU and our commitment to the languages, cultures, and history of the Mediterranean.
EXPECTATIONS

TESTIMONIALS
Summer 2022 Resident Fellow
Summer 2022 Resident Fellow
Opportunities to give guest lectures, offer a campus-wide presentation, and to attend IAU sponsored fieldtrips provided continuous opportunities to get to know faculty and students, share my own research, and learn more about the local region. One especially enjoyable aspect of my stay was the chance to audit a French language class. Beyond improving my language skills – which directly enhanced my ability to delve into French culture – it also provided regular contact with students, something I came to value as an important element of my overall experience. During my stay, I successfully completed several pre-existing projects, but also initiated new research that I hope will bring me back to Aix for years to come. In short, I found the IAU Resident Fellow experience academically productive and richly rewarding on many levels, not only in terms of cross-cultural learning, but in terms of the relationships developed within the IAU community. To my mind, such experiences represent one of the highlights of an academic career. I cannot think of a better way to spend a sabbatical semester."
