Ambassador Program

The IAU Ambassador Program was established in 2010 as a way to organize the more than 20,000 alumni who have completed their semester, academic year, summer, faculty-led program, or J-Term at IAU. The goal of the programs is to build a volunteer corps who can best represent IAU and to develop a robust and active network of IAU students, past, present and future. Alumni of IAU have gone on to become diplomats, successful business professionals, doctors, lawyers, teachers and leaders in their respective fields. The IAU Ambassadors form a prestigious group designed for interested IAU alumni to share their study abroad experience with prospective students, faculty and the study abroad office on their home campus as well as organize with other alumni to keep the IAU network strong. Over the years, the program has evolved, and now in addition to fulfilling the program's original goals, IAU Ambassadors assist with visits to other university campuses, represent IAU at Study Abroad Fairs across the United States and organize alumni events across the nation. IAU Ambassadors are drawn from all IAU programs, academic disciplines and class years. IAU has over 20 ambassadors representing it in over 10 universities.

Current IAU students can submit their application using this link.

Examples of past assignments include:
    • Meeting with and e-mailing your Study Abroad Advisor to educate them on the IAU program and your experience abroad
    • Meeting with and e-mailing your professors (especially those who may have been influential in your decision to study abroad)
    • Being an advocate for IAU on social media
    • Speaking to a class on your home campus
    • Staffing an IAU table at your school's Study Abroad Fair
    • Corresponding with a prospective IAU student about your experience

In addition, ambassadors may be called upon to represent IAU at functions both on and off campus, to help plan and execute IAU recruitment and to serve as peer mentors for students preparing to study abroad through IAU. Ambassadors are expected to study and master information on IAU and its history, to attend scheduled meetings for training and instruction and to conduct themselves at all times - not merely during the actual performance of duties - according to the highest standards of personal integrity and decorum.

All alumni, regardless of when they were enrolled at IAU, can share their IAU experiences by communicating with prospective students by e-mail or phone. Each option requires only a limited amount of time but is a great way for alumni to share their personal study abroad experience at IAU. Current IAU students interested in volunteering for this program should contact their Center Director. Other alumni interested in participating in the program may e-mail the U.S. office or call at 800-221-2051. Because of the amount of interest in this program and to ensure the right balance between centers (e.g.: The Aix Center, The School of Art) represented as well as home institutions, there is a selection process. If selected, participants will work through IAU’s U.S. Office in San Diego, CA to determine which option/s in the program they would prefer and will be provided with appropriate training.
